The Everard Webinar
New York City's Longest Running Gay Bathhouse
Service Description
The Everard was New York City’s longest running gay bathhouse. Located in the Tenderloin (today’s NoMad), it opened in 1888, during the Gilded Age, and closed in 1986, during the AIDS epidemic. At its peak in popularity, it was frequented by gay male celebrities like Noel Coward, Truman Capote, Rudolph Nureyev, and Gore Vidal. Of course, they called it the Everhard bathhouse. But how did it come into existence, and what became of it? On this steamy webinar you will meet: • The Gilded Age millionaire who built New York City’s finest bathhouse—men only, no women allowed. • His headstrong daughter, who temporarily gave the Everard a sex change—women only, no men allowed. • The mysterious lawyer who transformed the Everard into the world’s finest gay bathhouse. • The greedy slumlord who turned the once proud Everard into a firetrap. • The U.S. president who encouraged same sex relationships between “manly men” at the Everard. • The anti-vice zealot who raided the Everard, and was shocked at what he uncovered. • The closeted gay mayor who closed the Everard. • And the nine victims of a tragic fire at the Everard, who deserve to be memorialized.
